We have to keep our culture’: indigenous pageant celebrates Fiji’s traditional afro hairstyle.

At the annual festival celebrating local culture in the province of Cakaudrove in northern Fiji held in November, alongside celebrations of traditional dress, dance, poetry, song and craftsmanship, there was a pageant paying tribute to Indigenous hair. 🇫🇯

Nine women, representing the different districts in the province, wrapped in tapa, or masi, a traditional printed cloth made from the beaten bark of the mulberry tree and escorted by representatives from their district, showed off their traditional Fijian Buiniga hairstyles.

Arieta Digutu of Ketei village in Fiji, an 18-year-old student, was awarded runner-up in the competition.

“This competition is important, because we have to keep our culture. You don’t see girls my age wearing this hairstyle,” said Digutu, who felt proud to follow the example set by her mother and aunt, who also wear their hair in the traditional Buiniga style.

That's how the idea for “My Hair, My Crown” came out and that is also why the @curl_ish squad got invited to be part of such an important & touching project..

“Wow, look at all the women here with hair like mine!” her daughter excitedly exclaims as she enters the studio at the shooting day 😍

Seeing her daughters on set admiring the beauty of the women that look like them.. that have hair like them.. how beautiful the two girls felt after we did their hair.. really really touched our heart. Thank you for having us ❤️

As a white woman, setting up such a project means dealing with my dogmas and taken for granted beliefs and questioning them. In many conversations with my partner, i became aware that the love of hair has a different meaning and greater importance for our children than it ever did for me. As black girls, my daughters experience other things than those i experienced as a white girl. ⁠

Working on this project has not only strengthened my daughters, but also me. It helps me to better understand my children‘s questions and insecurities and to develop solutions as a family.⁠

A big thanks to the whole team for the positive and supportive atmosphere. Working with all the powerful women in front of and behind the camera was a wonderful experience ❤️
